STRUTTURA SPAZIALE IN TENSIONE

Spatial structure in tension is a significant work of art which allows us to understand the activity of the artist during the years of his membership to the MAC. The intense chromatic vitality, the musicality and the rhythm stressed in the composition show the importance ot this painter’s works during  the abstract-concrete movement in Italy after the Second World War.
The work of this Piedmontese artist is directly linked to scientific research projects  related to the psychology of perceptions expressed in the “Gestaltpsychologie” movement, which became known in 1950 due to  the theories expressed by D.Katz, in his  “Psychology of Shapes”. The artist, referring to these theories, begins to develop the idea of pictorial space as a dynamic space in which shapes are functional and adhere to the idea of balance among each single element. To this regard Luigi Lambertini wrote: “ In 1952, with his use of space-shape, Di Salvatore not only goes back to this theme, but analyzes  it in depth. The artist, as always, proceeds by segments.
His work is carried out  step by step, once the problem has been analyzed thoroughly.
In this painting we see the sum, or rather, the integration of different geometrical orientations and their structure. Space, due to these new contributions becomes  more and more polyvalent, articulated by a multitude  of different planes  and depth. Is space once again identified with time? Of courseit is it. The artist’s activity in the following decades  moves towards studies that are linked to  concrete abstraction and to the different perspective relationships among the pictorial elements. It is also interesting to remember  the importance of Di Salvatore in creating  the first Italian School of Design  in Novara in 1954 which was then moved  to Milan in 1970 under the name of” Scuola Politecnica del Design”.
